Dutch Spotted

Pedigree Dutch Spotted Sheep Society (DSSS) Flock number 052

After much consideration regarding what breed would be suitable to have alongside our Lleyn flock, we introduced Dutch Spotted sheep to Lane Farm in 2018. We initially purchased four ewes imported from The Netherlands at the Society import selection day in Sept 2018 and later that year also had the opportunity to purchase an additional four ewes imported from Belgium. Some of these  ewes are still with us and part of the  breeding flock alongside their offspring.

In 2019 the Dutch Spots had their first lambs; we were delighted with the result, and very happy with the ewes. They lambed well, were extremely maternal with masses of milk. and the lambs grew so fast.

Alongside the purebreds, the first graded lambs arrived (Spottie ram on a pure Lleyn ewe). There was a terrific trade for these classy 'Spoteyns' both as breeding stock and as commercial lambs. We have continued to 'grade up' and this year have several G2 lambs (87.5% DSSS) as well as G3 (75% DSSS) and G4 (50% DSSS) lambs. The G4 ewes tend to be black, with fantastic frame. They prove to be a very versatile cross which can be put to a Spotted tup with usually coloured (G3) lambs resulting, or back to a white tup with a 50/50 chance of white lambs.
